This Day In History (October 9th): Kurt Angle’s TNA Debut

On this day in professional wrestling history (Taped October 9th, 2006, Aired October 19th, 2006), TNA presented iMPACT! from the Impact Zone in Orlando, Florida.

This show is best remembered for the TNA debut of Kurt Angle.

The story goes as follows, Samoa Joe who was on an unprecedented winning streak at the time defeated NWA World Heavyweight Champion Jeff Jarrett at No Surrender 2006 in a non-title “Fan’s Revenge Lumberjack Match”, however after the match concluded Joe stole the title and kept it for himself.  Joe laid down an ultimatum that he would agree to give the title back to either Jarrett or Sting (who was Jarrett’s opponent for Bound For Glory) only on the terms that the winner of that match give Joe aitle opportunity.  This plan was refuted by TNA management, who laid down an ultimatum of their own…either Joe gives the title back or be fired.  Joe ripped up his termination papers planning to kept possession of the championship…cue Kurt Angle, who debuted to a monstrous pop from the Orlando crowd and went face to face, nose to nose with Joe.  Angle headbutted Joe which led to one of the best professional wrestling brawls between two legimate bad asses.  During the fracas, Jeff Jarrett snuck into the ring and retook possession of his NWA World Heavyweight Championship.
