This Day In History (October 2nd): John Cena Vacates WWE Championship

On this day in professional wrestling history (October 2nd, 2007), John Cena vacated the WWE Championship.

Cena won his 3rd WWE Championship on September 17th, 2006 defeating Edge in a hellacious Tables, Ladders & Chairs match at Unforgiven that year.  Cena’s 3rd title reign would go on to be the longest of the modern era, holding the title for 380 days!  Unfortunately the previous night on Monday Night Raw, Cena faced off with Mr. Kennedy…………….Kennedy!  The two had a decent match for what it was, but a botched hip toss would give Cena a torn right pectoral muscle.

It all turned out good for Cena in the end, although initially expected to miss six to eight months.  Cena would miraculously return just four months later at the 2008 Royal Rumble where he would go on to win the Royal Rumble match.
