This Day In History (September 25th): Vince Russo wins the WCW World Heavyweight Championship

17 Years Ago Today: On a episode of WCW Monday Nitro airing live from Uniondale, New York, Vince Russo defeated Booker T in a “Caged Heat” steel cage match to win his 1st & only WCW World Heavyweight Championship.

Russo was never officially announced the winner of the match, the match & show abruptly ended after Bill Goldberg speared Russo through the cage wall before Booker walked out of the cage door.

Russo showed up 2 days later on Thunder with the WCW World Heavyweight Championship in his possession and announced himself as the new WCW World Heavyweight Champion and retired on the spot.

Russo would eventually vacate the title the very next week on Nitro, with a new champion crowned later in the evening.  It eventually led to one of professional wrestling’s most infamous matches, “The San Francisco 49ers Match”.
